Madeline Young is an abstract artist living and working in regional NSW. Madeline has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Newcastle where she majored in traditional photography and printmaking.

Since beginning her own studio practice in 2011, Madeline has worked predominantly as a painter, creating abstracted landscapes and botanical oil paintings. Her imagery and compositions are strongly influenced by her days as a screen printer. Madeline simplifies and exaggerates the shapes she finds in nature and uses blocks of colour to create works that are simultaneously vibrant and serene.

This new series created for “Painting Pattern” is a nod to her screen-printing background. The half-tone pattern used commonly in screen-printing, creates a strong, graphic quality to the otherwise flat composition. The deliberately textural brushstrokes propose a tension between digitally created pattern and hand-painted, human marks.
